Why I decided not to work on the High Street

The tattoo industry has grown rapidly over the past few decades, becoming more mainstream and widely accepted. With this growth, tattoo artists now have more choices about where and how they work. While many tattooists still choose high street shops for visibility and foot traffic, others, like me, are setting up in private studios instead. But why would an artist step away from the busy high street in favour of a more tucked-away space?

1. A More Personal Experience:

Owning a private studio allows me to work one-on-one with clients without the distractions of walk-ins, noise, or crowded waiting areas. This creates a calmer atmosphere where clients can feel more relaxed, especially those who may be nervous about getting their first tattoo. It also means I have more focus and better communication during the design and tattooing process.

2. Greater Artistic Freedom:

High street shops can sometimes depend on, or have a number of walk-in customers looking for quick designs. In contrast, I work by appointment only, allowing me to dedicate more time to custom projects. This model attracts clients who want unique, meaningful pieces rather than flash tattoos, giving me more creative freedom.

3. Control Over the Environment:

In my own private space I control everything, from music and lighting, to cleanliness and décor. This creates a space that reflects my personal style which in turn makes me and my clients more comfortable. I believe this helps me deliver my best work and gives my clients a more personal experience. For example, clients can play their own music, helping them to feel more at ease.

4. Reduced pressure from competition on the high street:

Multiple tattoo shops often compete for attention. In a private setting, clients usually come specifically for that artist’s style, reducing the pressure to conform to trends or produce volume-based work.

5. Privacy for Clients:

Not everyone wants to get tattooed in front of passers by or strangers waiting for their turn. Private studios offer discretion and privacy, which appeals to clients who want a more intimate experience. This is especially important for tattoos placed on sensitive areas of the body.

6. A Better Work-Life Balance:

By working in my own private space and booking clients by appointment, I can set my own schedule. This flexibility means I have a healthier work-life balance, less burnout, and more time to focus on personal projects and family life.

7. Cost:

I have no expensive rent to pay so I can keep my prices at an acceptable level for me while also keeping them affordable for you!

Final Thoughts

Choosing between a high street shop and a private studio comes down to personal priorities. While high street shops offer visibility, walk-in traffic, and a lively environment, private studios provide peace, control, and a tailored experience. For me, the shift to private work isn’t just about location, it’s about creating the best environment for both my art and my clients.
